Classic Australian Literature Review

In the first of our series of great Australian classics, we look at The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough

An epic work, Thornbirds is really worth reading again. This 1977 best-selling novel has never been more relevant than today. The theme was nothing short of scandalous at the time, with the main characters' intriguing, forbidden love (Father Ralph de Bricassart and Meggie Cleary).

The book is a family portrait which tells of the differences between three generations and the ties (and home) that bind them together. With evocative descriptions of the Australian sheep country, The Thornbirds is extraordinarily entertaining and gripping fashion with characters that they’ll remain etched in your memory.
